Informal and Freelance Work on a Resume: Roles, Dates and Evidence
Describe odd jobs, freelance projects and independent services with examples, separate work periods and a copyable worksheet, without inventing employers or results.
Revised
You can include informal jobs, freelance projects and independent services on your resume when the work is real and relevant to your experience. Name the service, explain how you worked, give the actual periods and describe an output you can support. You do not need an invented company, job title or contract.
The key is context: serving your own clients differs from holding a position with an employer. This guide helps you describe that history; its labels do not establish a contractual classification.
Which informal work belongs on your resume?
Select activities that explain what you can do for the opportunity: preparing orders, discussing a service, organizing materials or making an item. There is no need to list every small job you have ever taken.
Brazilian career organization CIEE's resume builder asks about formal and informal experience, including short assignments. Its form illustrates room to describe work that actually happened.
If you are building the whole document, consult the first-job resume guide. Here, the task is organizing occasional services, including for someone whose background also contains regular employment.
Name the activity and explain the working context
Choose a description that makes the service recognizable. “Handmade ceramics — independent work” communicates more than “various odd jobs.” “Production director” would add responsibility the person might never have held.
| Actual situation | Possible description |
|---|---|
| Orders handled directly | Activity + independent work + private clients |
| Freelance project for a client | Service + freelance project + client named with permission when relevant |
| Occasional assistance to another person | Support activity + context + occasional involvement |
A client need not be presented as your employer. If you did not run a named company, do not create a business name to fill a line. If assistance was unpaid, make that clear where needed to understand the context; do not turn family help into paid employment.
The UK's National Careers Service recommends stating roles, dates and activities in your work history. The structure below applies that clarity to occasional services without assuming an employer.
Record separate periods accurately
Recover the months when work happened, distinguishing recurring services from individual orders. If you worked in February and March, then August and September 2026, simply writing “February–September” may suggest continuous work.
An alternative is “February–March and August–September 2026, occasional commissions.” If assignments were scattered irregularly throughout the year, say so explicitly. Group similar activities when that helps a reader, while keeping their periods and scope understandable.
Do not add together overlapping months for different clients to inflate your experience. Use “Present” only for work that continues. The employment-gap guide addresses a period without work; you do not have to fill it with an invented assignment.
A completed record and a resume entry to review
All scenarios in this article are fictional teaching examples created by FoxApply. They do not describe customers, hiring outcomes or the activity of the person photographed for the cover.
| Field | Example record |
|---|---|
| Service and context | Small ceramic pieces made to order, working independently |
| Actual periods | February–March and August–September 2026 |
| My involvement | Discussed shapes with clients, prepared pieces and arranged collection |
| Output | Finished pieces matching the agreed characteristics |
| Possible evidence | My own photographs after checking permission to use them and removing personal information |
| Limits | No team management; no revenue or satisfaction measurements |
The record could become this entry:
Handmade ceramics — independent work
Private clients; occasional commissions in February–March and August–September 2026.
Agreed piece specifications, organized materials and followed production through to collection. Checked finishes before handover and recorded the care instructions given to the client.
It describes production, organization and communication. It does not imply a factory, a permanent client base or team leadership. Keep these tasks only if they describe your actual work, and use the terminology you can explain comfortably.
Two other ways to describe the work
Freelance project with a defined output: “Digital menu layout — freelance project, July 2026. Organized text and images supplied by the client, checked price consistency with them and delivered the approved file for publication.” Do not attribute sales growth without information supporting that relationship.
Recurring service: “Private mathematics tutoring — independent work, October 2025–February 2026. Prepared fraction exercises and supported learners as they worked through them in weekly sessions.” Do not replace learning support with an unverified claim that students passed their exams.
Your career accomplishments inventory can retain details for later reference. On the resume, select what a reader needs to understand each experience rather than reproducing every note about the assignment.
What can support your description?
Authorized public work, your own photographs or a reference arranged with the client may help explain an output. Note what each item actually establishes: a photograph shows the object but does not independently prove timing, full authorship or satisfaction.
Do not publish conversations, addresses, contact details or client documents to make the entry look credible. Label a sample rebuilt with fictional data as a demonstration. Where no material is shareable, describe the process accurately and explain the limits of what you can show.
Check the form and prepare a short explanation
Where an application allows free text, identify independent work in the appropriate field. Keep the activity and dates consistent with your resume. If the fields cannot represent your history accurately, consult the application instructions or support; do not invent a company, relationship or date to proceed.
In a conversation, explain the setting: “These were occasional orders I handled directly. I managed the materials, production and collection; I did not have a team.” Then connect a task to the vacancy. The resume tailoring guide helps you make that selection while preserving the facts.
