Layoffs in 2026: company announcements and your job search plan
Explore five 2026 workforce announcements checked against official sources, plus a practical plan to review your resume, assess openings and track applications.
Revised
When reading about layoffs in 2026, check what each company actually announced: dismissals, planned position reductions and hiring freezes describe different situations. For job seekers, the news can help frame questions about an opening. By itself, it cannot tell you whether a particular team is hiring or explain the outcome of your application.
This article starts with Intellizence's overview of layoffs and hiring freezes and checks five cases against the companies' own announcements. The selection is a snapshot, not a ranking or a global census. Sources checked on September 24, 2026. After the figures, you will find FoxApply's own guide to organizing your next steps.
Which companies announced job cuts in 2026?
The dates refer to the announcements, not necessarily to when every employee leaves. The links lead to official sources in English.
| Company and sector | Announcement | Reported number and status | Context and official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bilfinger — industrial services | Sep 16, 2026 | Up to 1,500 positions worldwide could be affected | Program Agile; lower customer investment and delayed projects. Bilfinger announcement |
| Uber — mobility and delivery | Sep 2, 2026 | Reduction of about 10% of its team | Organizational simplification with fewer management layers. The announcement gives no absolute headcount. Uber announcement |
| Swiss Life — insurance and asset management | Sep 1, 2026 | Around 600 positions by the end of 2028, largely through natural attrition | A reduction in positions does not mean 600 immediate dismissals. Swiss Life announcement |
| Epic Games — gaming | Mar 24, 2026 | More than 1,000 employees laid off | The company cited lower Fortnite engagement and said the layoffs were unrelated to AI. Epic Games announcement |
| Atlassian — software | Mar 11, 2026 | Approximately 1,600 employees, or 10% of its team | Reorganization linked to investment in AI and enterprise sales, with local consultations where applicable. Atlassian announcement |
We have not added the figures together: the table combines percentages, reported layoffs and plans with different time frames. It also cannot be used to calculate unemployment rates or conclude that an entire sector has stopped hiring.
Layoffs, position reductions and hiring freezes: what is the difference?
In news coverage, a layoff generally describes an employer's decision to end someone's employment. The term does not replace the formal employment category recorded in the relevant country's documents. Position reductions may include vacancies that are no longer filled. A hiring freeze describes a pause in opening or filling roles within a defined scope.
Before drawing conclusions, check four details: which business unit is affected, in which country, over what period and through which mechanism. A global announcement does not automatically explain the situation of a local opening; a target for 2028 does not describe how many people have left today.
Is artificial intelligence causing every layoff?
The cases above do not support that conclusion. The published reasons vary, and investment in AI does not prove that every eliminated role was directly replaced. To make a career decision, turn your concern into specific questions: which tasks in your field have changed, which tools appear in the jobs you want and which real experiences demonstrate your ability to do the work?
Avoid adding “AI” to your resume simply to follow a trend. If you used a tool, explain the task, how you reviewed its output and which parts of the work remained your responsibility.
Should you apply to a company that has announced layoffs?
Assess the specific opportunity. Find the opening on the official website, check its requisition ID and record when you viewed it. When speaking with a recruiter, ask:
- Is the position still approved and accepting applications?
- Is it a replacement, an expansion or a newly created role?
- Is this team included in the announced reorganization?
- What are the next steps and the expected decision timeline?
Save the answer in your job application tracker spreadsheet. If a hiring freeze is confirmed, mark the opportunity as paused and keep other searches moving. If you are getting no replies, use the guide to applications that lead to no interviews before attributing the silence to a single cause.
A job search plan for the next seven days
This plan is an organizing suggestion, not a promise of finding a job within a week. Adapt the pace to your availability and personal circumstances.
| When | Action | Concrete outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Gather your personal employment records and list activities you can describe publicly | Verified dates and experiences, without copying confidential company files |
| Day 2 | Choose suitable roles, locations and working arrangements | A short list of criteria for filtering openings |
| Day 3 | Review your base resume using genuine experience | An updated document with correct contact details and clearly explained achievements |
| Day 4 | Compare your resume with a real opportunity | A tailored version and a list of requirements you do not yet meet |
| Day 5 | Update your professional profile and speak with relevant contacts | A clear explanation of the work you are looking for |
| Day 6 | Submit reviewed applications and record their progress | A history of openings, documents submitted and next actions |
| Day 7 | Review what progressed and what needs to change | Priorities for the following week, without treating silence as a rejection |
Our guide to tailoring your resume to a job description walks through day 4 with a complete example. For day 5, learn how to build a professional contact network. If you are considering another field, the career transition guide helps separate transferable skills from gaps that need preparation.
How to explain a layoff in a job interview
Keep your answer brief, factual and connected to what you can contribute. Here is a fictional example to adapt only if it reflects your situation:
My position was eliminated during a team reorganization. I worked on order tracking and supplier communication. I am now looking for an administrative role where I can apply that experience and help keep deliveries organized.
Do not invent an achievement to complete the answer or present rumors about your former employer as facts. If you are asked about an accomplishment, choose a real example and explain your contribution. Our guide to answering difficult interview questions develops this preparation further.

Frequently asked questions about layoffs and finding a new job
Are layoffs and hiring freezes the same thing?
No. One concerns employment ending; the other pauses hiring within a defined scope. Check the specific announcement, because a company may introduce more than one measure.
Do I need to change careers after a mass layoff?
The announcement alone cannot answer that question. Compare suitable openings, the work you want to do and the requirements you can demonstrate before investing in a career change.
How can I tell whether a job is still open after layoffs?
Check the official channel and ask the person managing the process to confirm. A listing that remains visible is a starting point; confirmation from the team helps you decide what to do next.
Does this list cover all layoffs in 2026?
No. It contains five announcements selected and checked on the stated date. It is not updated in real time and does not estimate the total number of unemployed people.
Sources and editorial approach
Intellizence was the starting point for the research. Each table entry links to the official announcement used for verification. We preserve the distinctions between announcement and implementation dates, percentages and absolute numbers, and plans and reported layoffs.
